Why I Chose it

I'm a fan of epistolary novels, and I'm also a fan of scenes of dinner parties where half the people are politely rude to the other half. This hits both categories. Is it historically plausible? I have no idea. But at least it's not so obviously implausible that I roll my eyes.

Unrelated Griping

This came up recently on a podcast I was listening to, but it's worth repeating: if you start in the middle of an action sequence, you still need to give the reader a reason to care about whether the character wins or loses. Otherwise, it's like reading notes for the fight choreographer, and who wants to invest time in that?
