Author's Description

Arianna's royal shapeshifting powers fail her on the eve of her betrothal--not that she wanted to marry anyway. Sent from her homeworld and court to recover from a politically-charged illness, she watches her sister overtake her life, becoming Arianna and the Heir in her stead. But with help from a mysterious young man who can disappear at will, she's going to take back her interstellar kingdom, come hell or Green Magics! An epic for fans of The Expanse and Game of Thrones--updates Fridays!

Why I Chose it

From the first paragraph, it's obvious we're in a science fiction political thriller that has some heft to its backstory. We meet Arianna (the heir) and her sister (the spare). Arianna's powers are suddenly failing her at a time when she can't afford to look weak. Intrigue and strong characters in the first episode -- that's enough for me to take a longer look!

[19 episodes so far, with 4 updates in the last 30 days.]

Who Might Like This

Great characters and political intrigue all wrapped up in space opera. If that's your jam, check this out!

Unrelated Griping

I tried searching the word "steampunk" today, and the user interface insists there is nothing in Vella matching that term. I found that really difficult to believe.

Next I tried "portal" and got a whole bunch of "uploaded one episode three months ago" stories. I know Amazon sees search results mostly as a place to dump paid ads, but they really could sort things better. All they are doing now is convincing potential customers to use a different serial app.

Later I went back and tried "steam punk", and it said "Did you mean steampunk?" and gave me eight recommendations that have one of the keywords set to "steampunk", so... Yeah. Their interface is terrible.
